How Therapy Helps When Things Are Going Well

Anyone can benefit from going to therapy consistently- whether you struggle with a little bit of anxiety or are experiencing troublesome emotions. Going to therapy when life feels calm and collected is absolutely most beneficial. Starting therapy when you’re not in a crisis or experiencing a major life event is the best time to start and the reasons for this include the following:

Its a good time to practice baseline skills

In therapy, you will learn effective coping strategies to help manage any issue that you’re experiencing. Practicing these coping skills when not in crisis will help you feel more comfortable and confident in learning the skill. Practicing coping strategies during a calm state will also give you time in practicing and utilizing the skill, which can help you understand how to navigate potential crisis in the future. Skills can include- deep breathing, meditation, grounding techniques. It will take time and lots of effort in building these strategies and finding coping skills that will work for you. When you learn these coping skills in the therapy session, it will help lay the foundation needed to deal with any future stressors or crises that may arise.

Its easier to learn skills when there isn’t a crisis or an emergency

Coming to therapy in the midst of a crisis or an emergency is extremely important and helpful. With coming to therapy in the middle of a crisis, you and the therapist are essentially ‘putting out fires’ and looking for ways to help you return to baseline. As with the opposite, coming to therapy when things are calm, will give you an opportunity to learn your triggers and you can take the time to figure out and understand what are causing potential crises. Its difficult to gain a full understanding of baseline coping skills in the midst of a crisis, which is why starting therapy early is key in building those foundational skills that are needed to cope and manage your well being.

It can help you express yourself in a healthy way

Communication is not always an easy skill to master. With the help of a therapist, you can learn great strategies to help navigate every relationship in your life. Therapy can teach you how to discuss uncomfortable topics in a healthy and productive way. When things in life are calm, becoming comfortable with expressing everyday feelings will help in the midst of a potential crisis. It allows the person to tolerate difficult emotions and express them in a healthy way.
